College Basketball Betting Preview: Villanova @ Georgetown 06/02/2010

The next chapter in one of the most storied rivalries in Big East men’s college basketball takes place Saturday as the 7th ranked Georgetown Hoyas (16-4) play host to the 2nd ranked Villanova Wildcats (19-1) in a matchup that will have a big impact on the national title scene.

Villanova won their last meeting back in Janurary and the Hoyas are looking for revenge. Gametime is set for 7:00 pm ET and will be televised nationally on ESPN.

The Big East has been by far the dominant league in college basketball this season with Syracuse and West Virginia also sitting in the top ten. Villanova is coming into the Georgetown matchup after a close win over Seton Hall on Tuesday night. Georgetown has a tune up with South Florida on Wednesday then have the Hoyas at the Verizon Center on Saturday.

John Thompson will have his Hoyas fired up for this big game as the outcome can have a big effect on the national rankings. Scottie Reynolds and the Wildcats want to make sure that the young Georgetown squad doesn’t make a run like they did in the second half of the previous meeting in Philly. This game should definitely be one of the must watches of the upcoming weekend.

Top 25 teams Hoyas, Blue Devils battle Saturday

The No. 7 Duke Blue Devils (17-3, 13-6 ATS) take on the No. 11 Georgetown Hoyas (15-4, 8-7 ATS) in a Top 25 College Basketball tilt on Saturday (1 pm ET, CBS). In this series Duke has won 4 of the last 5 but Georgetown has covered four, and the Hoyas will look to avenge last seasons, 76-67 (+9′) loss.

The Hoyas will have 4 days rest after the loss to #4 Syracuse snapping a 5-game win streak over ranked opponents. The Hoyas are led by Freeman (16 ppg), Monroe (14.8 ppg, 10.1 rpg) and Wright (14.6). Wright has been held to single digits in all 4 losses. Both step outside conference play with this being the 1st of a 3 game home stand for the Hoyas.

Duke is coming off a win over a feisty Florida State team and has held their last two opponents to 51.5 ppg. Duke is lead by their “Big 3”, Jon Scheyer, Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith, who together average 53 ppg this season. Scheyer and Singler combined for 26 pts & 20 rebounds vs the Hoyas last year.

The popular bet is on Duke (7-2 ATS FAV), but they are 2-3 ATS on the road and with the ACC Title in reach Coach K has the task of keeping the team focused with #22 Georgia Tech on deck. These teams are sound defensively and if GTWN can stay disciplined (25 TO’s vs Syr), they’ll have a shot at adding to their 9-1 (3-4 ATS) record at home.

Texas Longhorns at Connecticut Huskies: College Basketball Preview

The Texas Longhorns, who lost their first game of the season Monday night, cannot stew very long as they travel to play the No. 21 Connecticut Huskies.

Texas boasts four players who average double-digit figures led by Damion James who is averaging 17.3 points a game along with 11 rebounds as well. Meanwhile the Connecticut Huskies have been struggling of late and with Coach Jim Calhoun taking a medical leave from coaching they will need to be even more focused.

Connecticut does not have to take a back seat to anyone when it comes to scoring points. They have four players who average in double figures lead by Jerome Dyson 18.6 points a game. Connecticut is a team that has lost some close games which shows you they can play with anyone in the Nation.

This matchup could come down to who wants it more. Connecticut will need to get plenty of offense from their starters, as their bench is not as deep as the Texas Longhorns. Playing the Huskies on their home floor is tough no matter what.

Texas will need big game from their starters to offset the crowd early and grind out a win. The second half of games has given Connecticut troubles all season long. They must avoid that against Texas if they want to pull the upset. A slower paced game is also what the Huskies want, as a fast-paced game will play right into the Longhorn hands. Even though the Longhorns will be favored, Connecticut should give them a good game on their home court.

Villanova-Louisville NCAA Hoops Preview, 1/12/10

Monday, January 11, sees 6th-ranked Villanova on the road to play at unranked Louisville. It’s an important clash between Big East unbeatens (both are 3-0 in the Big East).

The Wildcats, 14-1 overall, are led by senior Scottie Reynolds’s with nearly 18 points per game. Junior Antonio Pena leads them with just over 8 reabounds a game, while Corey Fisher’s 4.5 assists leads the Wildcats.

For Louisville, 12-4 overall, sophomore Samardo Samuels leads them with 15.5 points and 8 rebounds a game. Senior Edgar Sosa leads the Cardinals with just over 4 assists per game.

The Wildcats prefer a more up-tempo game while Louisville prefers to play it a bit slower. Villanova’s guard-heavy lineup causes matchup problems with their quickness. Louisville, on the other hand, is a more balanced squad and wears teams down with their 11-man rotation.

‘Nova is 10-4 ATS this season, one of the best cover teams in the Top 25. Louisville, on the other hand, is 5-6 ATS so far. However, over the past three years or so, the Cards have been great in conference play, going 42-13-2 ATS in their last 57 conference games.

For the ‘09-’10 season, the two teams are a combined 17-7 on Over bets, yet the last four in this series have all been Under the total.

Louisville is -3 in this one and the O/U is 156.

College Basketball Recruiting

A great number of high school students are talented basketball players, and thus college basketball recruiting for sports management scholarships focuses a lot on high school baseball athletes.  Students try out in college basketball recruiting for a spot in college basketball teams. Due to the immense popularity of basketball in the United States, college basketball has a considerable following among college and high school students alike.

One of the factors that have been integral to the success of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament is television coverage of the games.  CBS began covering all games of the NCAA tournament in 1991, with the exception of the single Tuesday night so-called play-in game, which is televised by ESPN.  Currently, CBS airs the remaining 63 games of the tournament proper. Most areas in the U.S. see only eight of 32 first round games, seven second round games, and four regional semifinal games. Coverage of these games usually preempts regular programming schedules, which results in far fewer hours of first-round coverage, but allows the games to reach a wider audience.

It is important for high school students to know more than the basics in order to succeed in college baseball recruiting and sports management scholarships. Many are hoping to get noticed during college baseball recruiting in order to play in college baseball teams.  Fortunately, the Internet has proven to be a useful venue for both athletes in high school and athletic recruiters looking for new talent.  There are many websites and online forums wherein students and scouts can come together and interact.  D1Athletes is an online community wherein student athletes and coaches alike can share and exchange information they need concerning sports management scholarships.  D1Athletes offers them a place to build an online presence and gain important public exposure.

When the basketball players arrive the first day of college, but they have to go to the practice on the same day. The college basketball players must be there everyday until the time of games and after the season is over.
