College Basketball: PSU Star Awarded NEFC Honor Roll

The New England Football Conference honored the starting middle linebacker on the Plymouth State University football team on Monday for his performance in last Saturday’s victory over Bridgewater State University.

For the second time this season, senior linebacker Brian Castellucci (Derry) was named to the NEFC Weekly Honor Roll. Over previously undefeated Bridgewater State as the Panthers limited the Bears to 152 yards, more than 150 yards below their season average, he led Plymouth State’s defense in a 17-0 shutout.

Including seven solo stops and one for lost yardage, Castellucci made nine total tackles. Since blanking UMass Dartmouth last September, the 5-10, 204-pound co-captain led PSU to its first whitewash, handing the Bears their first shutout defeat since an 18-0 home loss to Worcester State on Nov. 2, 2002. Castellucci, a first Team All-NEFC selection a year ago, was also named to the NEFC Honor Roll two weeks ago after PSU’s season-opening victory over Castleton. This Saturday, the Panthers, 2-1 overall, travel to UMass Dartmouth Saturday for the first NEFC Boyd Division game of the season. Kickoff is set for noon.

Plymouth State University coaches and student-athletes are already gearing up for the 2010-11 winter sports campaigns, although the leaves are just beginning to turn colors in central New Hampshire.

Winter sports schedules for the Panthers are now available online. In the new Hanaway Rink on campus, highlighting this year’s winter schedules will be the debuts of PSU’s men’s and women’s ice hockey teams. By hosting Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday, Nov. 6, Plymouth State will begin the 40th year of men’s ice hockey, in the first varsity men’s game at Hanaway Rink, and the school will host Norwich University on Friday, Nov. 12, in the first varsity women’s game in the new arena.

Opening up its season on Nov. 5, the Panther women’s swimming and diving team will be the first winter team to compete. On Nov. 15, the men’s and women’s basketball teams will play their first games. On Nov. 17, the wrestling team begins competition and the alpine ski team begins racing in January.
