The Buffaloes of the University of Colorado will visit the Buckeyes of Ohio State on September 24th, 2011, for the first time in 25 years. Ohio State will offer the University of Colorado $1.4 million to visit Columbus, confirmed by athletic director Gene Smith.

To come and play Ohio State is anywhere from $400,000 to $750,000 with no intentions of visiting the opposing teams stadium, the usual price that Ohio State pays non-conference teams. Ohio State will have home games 3 out of the 4 weekends in September of 2011, being that the date for the two to meet is locked in. Against the Miami Hurricanes, will be their only road game.

Between the two schools, their match-up next year will be the 5th meeting. With 3 wins and only 1 loss, Ohio State leads the series. The cash that is being offered is also loved by Colorado. From the Big-12 conference to the Pac-10 conference next season, the school is looking to relocate.

The Buffaloes finished 3-9 with 2 of those wins being conference victories, last season. Since 2007, they haven’t been to a bowl game when they face Alabama in the Independence Bowl. for the Ohio State Buckeyes, it was a better season. They were the Big Ten and Rose Bowl Champions. With 1 loss coming from inside the conference, they finished 11-2, and they beat the University of Oregon in the Rose Bowl, 26-17.

The Western Athletic Conference is taking a hard stance against Fresno State and Nevada after the two schools accepted bids to join the Mountain West Conference, putting the league in a dire situation.

The moves also potentially destroy a WAC plan to bring in BYU for sports other than football. The addition of BYU to sports like basketball would help the WAC survive, but that deal is now in jeopardy, similar to its’ sportsbook odds. In reaction to the news of the departures, WAC commissioner Karl Benson will demand that each school pay a $5 million fee and wait until the 2012 season to depart.

After the WAC lost Boise State earlier this summer, the league was scrambling to regroup. Less than a week ago, WAC teams reach a buyout agreement aimed at keeping the remaining schools together. Nevada did not sign the agreement, but Benson still believes the school should be held accountable. Benson expressed further anger at the schools by saying he had wished he made the fee $20 million.

Since Fresno State and Nevada did not announce their intention to leave by July 1, Benson also said they should be obligated to the WAC until 2012. The six remaining WAC schools will determine if Fresno State and Nevada can leave the league in time for the 2011 season.

The WAC is no stranger to change. The league has ranged from as few as six teams to as many as sixteen. In 1999, half the schools split to form the Mountain West. The Mountain West lost Utah and stands to lose BYU, leading to their invitations to WAC schools.

Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich knows gaudy details during the trial of a woman who tried to extort millions from Rick Pitino. It is believed that this affect some people’s perception of the highly successful coach.

On Thursday, Jurich reiterated his support for Pitino after a jury found Karen Cunagin Sypher guilty of retaliating against a witness, two counts of lying to the FBI and three counts of extortion.

During six hours of testimony, Pitino acknowledged that he had a sexual encounter with Sypher. This encounter with Sypher happened in July 2003 at a Louisville restaurant. For her silence, she demanded millions in exchange, leading Pitino to eventually tell authorities about the plot.

Jurich said, “I feel very proud in the fact that he did own up to everything. He understood the consequences taking this to the U.S. Attorney, taking this to the government. He knew his name would be dragged through the mud but he also wanted the facts out there because the only thing that would vindicate him in this case were the facts.”

Jurich added that the university would not discipline Pitino for his conduct, although he stressed on the fact that in the whole process there were no winners. At the request of university president James Ramsey, Pitino publicly apologized last summer.

After the verdict was announced, Pitino was not available for comment. He signed a four-year contract extension, which will him at Louisville through 2017.

Juror Charles Smith said that he didn’t jump into conclusions about Pitino’s character. He acknowledged that about being a Louisville fan.
Whether the trial will affect Pitino’s job performance, Jurich has no concerns. He pointed out the fact that Pitino went straight from the witness stand to the recruiting trail, which reflects his commitment towards his work.

After announcing in April that the NCAA men’s basketball tournament would be expanded to 68 teams, NCAA officials finally announced their plans for how the expanded field would be handled. Basically, this could be considered a mini round of “First Four.” This initial round will include the lowest seeds as well as the last at-large teams that qualified for the tournament.

Initially, the NCAA was considering going with the lowest eight seeds to comprise this new round but decided against this in the end. This is probably bad news for mid-major schools who have generally had too many schools represented in the first round of the tournament. As far as the bigger conferences, this could mean that two lower seeded teams could be eliminated in this early round.

This is the 2nd time the field has been expanded in the past nine years after one team was added in 2001. In 1985 the tournament had a major expansion going from 48 to 64 teams. Even though this new format will not please everyone involved, it will probably go over pretty well considering the other options that were being discussed. Most experts as well as fans hope that this will be the end of expansion for a long while but as long as TV revenues continue to rise, who really knows when it will end.

Michael Jordan, a professional basketball player, who is possibly the greatest player of all time, now has two children that play for Central Florida. Jeff Jordan reportedly joined his brother Marcus Jordan and enrolled in UCF. The pair is excited that they will now play for the Knights together in front of their well- known father Michael Jordan.

Jeffrey Jordan formerly played for Illinois; however he left the team after the last season played. He averaged an amazing 13 minutes per game played last season, out of a total of 92 games. Unfortunately, Jeffrey Jordan will be required to sit out during the first season, which is a rule of transferring. He will join his brother Marcus Jordan on the court for the 2011- 2012 season.

Jeffrey also confirmed on his Twitter account that the rumors were true; he is joining the UCF team. On Friday, he proudly exclaimed, “About take off to my new school the University of Central Florida in Orlando… I’ll holla at y’all on the Side.” Later in the evening, Jeffrey Jordan posted, “First night in Orlando… wow.”

Jeffrey is the older of the two brothers. Marcus Jordan the younger brother was very excited that his brother was joining him. He too happily posted on his Twitter page that, “My brother … is officially here… Haha let’s dooooo ittt!!!!” The last time the two played with each other on a team was in high school. There is a lot of excitement about Jeffrey joining the team from friends, family, and fans.

The NCAA July evaluation period is a critical time for NCAA college coaches. The month of July is a big month for coaches as they jump from basketball camp to basketball camp in order to catch a glimpse of the next recruit that could possibly turn their program into a contender or keep their team at an elite level.

Small forward Michael Gilchrist of Elizabeth, N.J. is widely regarded as the prize of this year’s recruiting class and wherever he is playing, there will be plenty of college coaches in the immediate vicinity. He is also tipped to be a NCAA basketball odds favortite in coming season. Another prospect that is challenging Gilchrist for top billing is small guard Austin Rivers. Rivers plays for the United States under 18 national team and is highly regarded by many of the NCAA coaches. Most coaches will be in Las Vegas for the July evaluation period which extends from July 6-15 and 22-31.

The July evaluation period actually has made the summer months more enjoyable for NCAA College coaches. Now that the recruiting period has been limited to the July evaluation period and condensed their activity into one intense month of wooing prospects and making inroads with their coaches, so they can be tipped off when the next NCAA quality player is featured.

Las Vegas is the central hub of activity for the largest summer tournaments and summer leagues which include the best prospects in the nation. There are other locations featuring major camps and tournaments but the best ones are located in Las Vegas.

With the 2010 NBA Draft this week, let’s take a look at the NBA’s One-and-Done rule regarding the selection of College Basketball players.

With so many talented players and college basketball odds favorites are being discovered in High School gymnasiums all over the country it was inevitable that a rule like One-and-Done would come into play. It requires a player to be a minimum of 19 years old and have at least one year of college under their belt. However some believe that this rule causes more issues than it solves. The 2010-2011 season will be the last season that the agreement runs through and it will be interesting to see if they extend it.

Players were also required to decide by a May 8th deadline if they wanted to remain at school. This poses a difficult choice for these young kids. Do they stay and educate themselves or take a chance at getting their dream job in the NBA? Many coaches are of the opinion that one year isn’t long enough and new rules should be in place stating that these players must remain in school until their junior year. This gives them a better chance at a higher education and allows the player to grow and be coached before entering the draft.

Because of the change in the deadline this year it caused many of the players not to be able to show the NBA teams their skills. Without being able to audition properly for the prospective teams it may add a shakeup as to who goes in what round. This system is something I expect the NCAA and NBA to get straightened out for next year.

John Wooden, who died June 4 at the age of 99, was an icon in NCAA College Basketball. Born in 1910 in the town of Hall, Indiana, as a young boy his basketball idols were Fuzzy Vandivier and Franklin Wonder Five. When he was 14 his family moved to a town called Martinsville, he led the high school team to the state championship finals for three consecutive years, winning the tournament in 1927. He was a three time All-State selection.

Wooden met his future wife, Nell Riley, at a carnival in July 1926. They got married in 1932 and to celebrate, they went to a Mills Brothers concert. John and his wife had a son named James Hugh Wooden, and a daughter named Nancy Anne Muehlhausen.

Unfortunately, his wife Nell died from cancer on March 21st, 1985. Even after her death, Wooden remained faithful to his wife. He visited her grave on the 21st of every month. Wooden began coaching at Dayton High School in Kentucky. His first year coaching would be the only year where He would have a losing record. The ended the season with 6 wins and 11 losses. After Dayton, Wooden went back to Indiana to coach at South Bend Central High School. He ended his high school coaching career at 218 wins and 42 losses. He had to enter the WWII and delay his coaching career.

After World War II Wooden coached at Indiana Teacher’s College also knows as Indiana State, where he also served as the Athletic Director. In 1947, Wooden’s basketball team won the Indiana Collegiate Conference title and received an invitation to the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB) National Tournament in Kansas City.

Wooden declined the offer due to the policies of banning African American players. Wooden had an African American player on his team and found it to be offensive to go into a team tournament and leave out a member of his team. In 1948, Wooden led his team to the NAIB tournament finals again. Wooden now accepted the bid due to the policies of banning African American Players had changed. However, Indiana State lost to Louisville in the finals. This was the only championship game a Wooden-coached team ever lost. John Wooden was inducted into the Indiana State University Athletic Hall of Fame on February 3, 1984.

Wooden then Coached UCLA from 1948 to 1975. He would go on to win a total of 620 in 27 seasons and 10 NCAA titles during his last 12 seasons, including seven in a row from 1967 to 1973. He also led his UCLA team to the longest winning streak of 88 wins in a row, a record which has yet to be broken.

On December 18th at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, one of college basketball’s finest traditions will once again take place. That date marks the 75th annual All-College Basketball Classic. The very first Classic was held in 1936. While tradition is important, it is the match-ups that truly make something “classic.” This year, the All-College Basketball Classic delivers great match-ups that any basketball fan will be anxious to see.

Both Oklahoma State and Oklahoma are playing in the Classic this year, in front of their home crowd. First, Oklahoma State will battle Alabama. Last year, Oklahoma State finished with a 22-11 record, which placed them right in the middle of the Big 12. Alabama, on the other hand, finished 17-15 overall. While both teams were far from great last year, they will hope to bounce back, and a win in the Classic is a great way to do just that.

After the conclusion of the Oklahoma State/Alabama game, the Oklahoma Sooners will take the floor to face the basketball betting favorites, Cincinnati Bearcats. Oklahoma had a very bad season last year, going 13-18. One thing Oklahoma is not used to is losing and they should bounce back this year. Cincinnati finished 19-16.

The All-College Basketball Classic always delivers thrills, and this year will be no exception. All four teams that are playing are hungry and need to bounce back in a big way. Come December 18th, we will see who starts off with a roar, and who starts off with a whimper.
