Atlantic 10 – Richmond Spiders

Hailing from the East Coast city of Richmond, Virginia, the University of Richmond Spiders have consistently put together numerous impressive basketball seasons. The Atlantic 10 Conference, in which the Richmond Spiders play, is not known as one of the most powerful, but the Spiders do not let that hold them back. Year after year, they are known as “giant killers,” and it is not uncommon to see the Spiders upset a larger-known team, either during the regular season or during the NCAA Tournament. Perhaps one of their most notable upsets came in 1984, when the Richmond Spiders defeated Charles Barkley and the Auburn Tigers in the NCAA Tournament.

Even though they have never won a National Championship, they remain the only team to have won NCAA Tournament games as a 12, 13, 14, and 15 seed. They are also the only 15 seed to have ever knocked a 2 seed out of the Tournament. Many of these statistics show that just because a team is favored to do really well in the tournament does not mean they will have an easy game against the Richmond Spiders. The Spiders have not built their reputation on weak playing and mistakes. They regularly capitalize on being the underdogs. Head Coach Chris Mooney wouldn’t have it any other way. Eleven Richmond Spiders players have continued on to pursue careers in the National Basketball Association, including Johnny Newman, who played 16 seasons in the NBA, for teams such as the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, and the Denver Nuggets, among others.
