Big 12 – Baylor Bears

Baylor University is located in Waco, Texas and is the home of the Baylor Bears men’s basketball team.  They are a part of NCAA Division I intercollegiate play, and they are members of the Big 12 Conference.  The Baylor Bears first basketball team was formed in 1907 and they were coached by Luther Burleson.  Later on in 1911, Ralph Glaze took over and had the best winning percentage of any coach in school history at .788.

The Bears won their first Conference Championship in the SWC in 1932.  This came a year after one of the worst tragedies in college sports history.  This tragedy happened in 1927 when the Bears men’s basketball team was traveling to the University of Texas by bus.  The bus inadvertently crosses some train tracks on a cloudy day and heard the whistle of a train right as they were crossing the rails.  The train struck the bus and killed 10 of the players.  These players are referred to as the Immortal Ten and have a statue paying tribute to them on campus.

The Team has never won an NCAA National Championship but they did make it to the Finals in 1948 where they were the runners up.  They made it to the Final Four in both 1948 and 1950, and have had five total NCAA tournament appearances.  They have been regular season champions in their conference 5 different times, but all five were before 1950.  Some notable players that competed on the Bears team include Terry Teagle, David Wesley, Vinnie Johnson, and Brian Skinner.
