Big 12 – Texas A&M Aggies

Texas A&M University is the home of the Aggies men’s basketball team, and it is located in College Station, Texas.  The Texas A&M Aggies are an NCAA Division I college team, and are currently part of the Big 12 Conference.  The Aggies basketball team can be historically reviewed in terms of coaching eras. The first was the Shelby era when Shelby Metcalf was given the the head coaching job in 1963.  He helped his team win the Southwest Conference Championship that year for the first time.  His legacy went on with a total of six Southwest Conference Titles, and he also helped the team get into the NCAA Tournament 6 times.  He finished his career at a record of 438-306, and tallied the most wins of any couch in the Southwest Conference.

After Shelby left, the Aggies went into a bit of a slump referred to as the “dark ages” and since hiring Brian Gillespie have made quite a comeback recently.  As a whole, the Aggies have made 10 total NCAA Tournament appearances and have been Conference regular season champions 11 times.  They have yet to win a National championship but have had four consecutive years of getting into the tournament, so it looks like they are slowly improving.

There have been a few Texas A&M players to move on from the collegiate level to play in the National Basketball Association.  Some of these players included Winston Crite who played at Texas in 1987, Walt Davis who played in 1952, and Jimmie Gilbert who played 1986.  There a couple of Aggies who are currently in the NBA like DeAndre Jordan of the Los Angeles Clippers, and Antoine Wright of the Toronto Raptors.
