Big East – Marquette Golden Eagles
Few other Division I teams in the NCAA have enjoyed as much success as the Marquette Golden Eagles. The team has repeatedly shown that it can play with the big boys. Located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Marquette University is the home of the Golden Eagles, and has been since the program’s inception. The Marquette Golden Eagles are one of several teams in the Big East Conference, and although they have never won a Big East Championship, they consistently enjoy a commanding presence.
They are very widely known as a bracket-busting team, and have upset their share of high-ranked teams. With one NCAA National Championship (1977) under their belt, they have performed very consistently, although further championships always seem to be just a little too far out of reach. They have reached the Final Four three times (1974, 1977, and 2003), and made appearances in the NCAA Tournament 27 times (1955, 1959, 1961, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009), including in four of the last five years. Their combined NCAA Tournament record is 34-28. Few other NCAA Division I teams can claim such success, and this is a testament to how seriously they take the sport of basketball.
The Marquette Golden Eagles have several heated rivalries with other teams, including University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Louisville, University of Notre Dame, University of Pittsburg, and DePaul University. Over the years, Marquette has produced 30 players who have continued on to play in the NBA, including current NBA superstar Dwayne Wade, who was the 2006 NBA Finals MVP and member of the 2008 USA Olympic basketball team in Beijing, winning a gold medal.
