Big East – Pittsburgh Panthers
The Pittsburgh Panthers are located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and are part of the NCAA Division I basketball program. They belong to the Big East Conference and they are commonly known as the “Pitt Panthers”. They play at the Peterson Events Center which is on the University campus. The Panthers‘ biggest rival is West Virginia University, who is also part of the Big East Conference. Their rivalry is popularly referred to as the “backyard brawl” and has gone on for years.
The Pittsburgh Panthers created their first men’s basketball team in 1905 and other than the 1909 and 1910 seasons, they have had a team ever since. They have tacked up 1,412 victories since that original season, and only lost 1,032 games since 1905. Their first coach was Benjamin Printz and they currently are coached by Jamie Dixon, who got the job back in 2003.
Before the NCAA Tournament days, the Pittsburgh Panthers won two pre-tournament era championships in 1927 and 1929. Doc Carlson was the coach for both of these championship teams and his star player was Charley Hyatt. He was a three time all-American and a two-time national scoring champion. Charley Hyatt played before the National Basketball Association was created so he never had an NBA career but he did earn 3 all-pro awards and became a member of the Consensus All-American team when it was first created in 1929. One other notable All-American player is Don Hennon, who helped the Pittsburgh Panthers get two different bids to the NCAA Tournament.
