SEC – Tennessee Volunteers

The Tennessee Volunteers are part of NCAA Division I basketball and belong to the Southeastern Conference (SEC).  The University of Tennessee is located in Knoxville, Tennessee and is the home of the men’s basketball Volunteers as well as the women’s team which are known as the “Lady Volunteers”.  The Tennessee basketball program has seen a history of NCAA tournament success without ever landing a National Championship.  They have been in the NCAA Tournament sixteen times and made it as far as the Sweet Sixteen five different times (1967, 1981, 2000, 2007, and 2008).  They have also been in the NIT tournament eleven times and have won the regular season conference title nine times.  They have also shared Southeastern conference championships with another team in the 1972, 1977, 1982, and 2000 regular seasons.

The Tennessee Volunteers also have a good history of producing NBA players.  They have put out the likes of Bernard King, two time all-star Allan Houston, Ernie Grunfeld, Tony White, Dale Ellis, Larry Robinson, and Ron Slay.  Some of these players are still currently playing in the National Basketball Association.  Only two players have had their jerseys retired at the university and they were Ernie Grunfeld and Bernard King.  King actually ended his college career averaging a double-double every game.

The Volunteers actually won the pre-tournament era championship in 1916 and have stated that they would claim the national championship that year.  That was their only undefeated season at 16-0.  Their last NCAA Tournament appearance was as recently as 2008.
